In 1957, nine African American high school students were chosen to integrate a Whites only public school testing out the 1954 Supreme Court Decision of Brown vs. Board of Education, declaring that segregation was unconstitutional in public schools and were failing to integrate “with all deliberate speed”. The Little Rock Nine were met with resistance on the first day of school by being physically blocked by angry white protesters and the Arkansas National Guard to prevent them from entering the building. Eventually, President Eisenhower called in $1,200 members of the U.S. Army to body the situation so the Little Rock Nine could integrate.
