The first openly gay politician and human rights activist leader in San Francisco, California who was a prominent figure of the Gay Rights Movement of the 1970s. Milk battled legislation that denounced the rights of gay individuals in schools and in the workplace and was successful in his opposition against the Briggs Initiative. Tragically, Milk was slain by the hands of a former co-worker Dan White. After Milk's death San Francisco rioted about White's lenient verdict and cause the 1979 White Night Riots.
