After Prince’s song “Dear Nikki” debuted in 1984 the explicit lyrics caught the attention of Tipper Gore, wife of then senator Al Gore. Gore went on to help form the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) in 1985, which called for a rating system for explicit music. The PMRC even brought their concerns to the US Senate, where a settlement was reached with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and 19 major music labels to include a label stating “Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics” on all music that the RIAA deemed to include “Explicit lyrics, including explicit depictions of violence and sex”. This label is now synonymous with the genre of Hip-Hop/Rap.
