McCarthy was a Minnesotan politician born in Watkins, Minnesota who started out his career by teaching in public schools, and eventually at St. John’s University and the College of St. Thomas. He served in the US House of Representatives and Senate from 1949-1971, and unsuccessfully ran for president 5 times between 1968-1988. Eugene McCarthy’s most famous run for president came in 1968, where he was a vocal about anti-war advocate, eventually forcing the incumbent president, Lyndon B. Johnson, to drop out of the race. While he his most famously remembered for his failure to obtain presidential office, McCarthy can also be remembered as a man of strong convictions and integrity, a champion for immigration reform and foreign relations, who proudly represented Minnesota during a tumultuous time for America.
