The Black Sox scandal occurred during the 1919 World Series between the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds. Eight players on the Chicago White Sox were accused of intentionally losing the World Series in exchange for money from a gambling syndicate led by Arnold Rothstein. Most famously involved was “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, who accepted $5,000 in exchange for below average performance. In spite of the allegations, Jackson professed his innocence and actually led the series in various statistical categories. Following the scandal, the first Commissioner of Baseball was appointed to try and redeem its reputation.
