The Bay of Pigs invasion was a covert military operation in which members of the CIA-sponsored group of Cuban exiles named Brigade 2506 attempted to overthrow Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and his communist regime. The invasion took place on April 17, 1961, and ultimately failed three days later when the members of the Brigade surrendered. Following the failed invasion, Castro, who had taken command of the force which had defeated the brigade, had become a national hero, bolstering his position as Cuba’s leader, led to the deterioration of US-Cuba relations, the strengthening of Soviet-Cuban relations, and is one of the principle causes of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
