A formative presence in the avant-garde movement in the early 20th century, Gertrude Stein was an influential writer and leader of her fellow artists, ranging from Picasso to Hemingway. She is an esteemed “ex-pat” of the United States, spending most of her adult life in Paris and elsewhere in France. Her most well known work is The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and her innovative use of language and criticism is revered still today.
