In October 1938 a radio broadcast rendition of the 1898 novel War of the Worlds aired, directed and performed by Orson Welles. The performance was based on the novel which depicted an alien invasion and was placed in the 1938 setting. The broadcast became famous for tricking many of its listeners into believing the Martian invasion was actually occurring. Outrage occurred days afterward in the media as a reaction towards the broadcast and Welles, however, securing Welles’ name as a dramatist in 1938.
