In the Fall of 1982, 7 people suddenly died in the city of Chicago and nearby suburbs. It was quickly discovered each person had taken Tylenol shortly before their death. Within days, lab tests proved these people had been poisoned by potassium cyanide that had been substituted for the powder in the Tylenol capsules. Immediately, a recall of all Tylenol products was issued and the public became fearful of taking any over the counter medicine. It was determined the poison was substituted after the product left the factory. Within a year, the U.S. Congress passed the Tylenol Bill making it illegal to tamper with consumer products and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) established guidelines for manufacturers to make tamper proof products.
