The RMS Titanic set sail from London in early April, 1912, headed for New York. The ship was over 800 feet long, and of a state-of-the-art design that led to it being termed “unsinkable.” On the morning of April 15th, the Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank, killing more than 1,500 passengers. The Titanic disaster captured public attention and helped improve ship safety. It inspired the first Safety of Life at Sea Convention, in 1913, and led to the creation of the International Ice Patrol.
