Wong Kim Ark was born in San Francisco, California in 1873 to Chinese immigrant parents who were legally residing in the United States. After a trip abroad, he was denied reentry into the United States due to the Chinese Exclusion Act - leading to the Supreme Court case The United States v. Wong Kim Ark. This Supreme Court case was monumental as immigration policy as it reaffirmed that American citizenship is based on the place of one’s birth rather than the nationality of one’s parents.
