Looking for a way to offset the cost of having British soldiers stationed in the colonies, the British government passed the Stamp Act. This Act added taxes to anything that was printed. This meant an increase in taxes on everything from receipts, playing cards, newspapers, and official documents. This Act was quickly repealed in 1766 due to the negative response and actions by the Colonists.
