On March 12, 1990, thousands of disability rights activists gathered at the U.S. Capitol building to advocate for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). As disabled demonstrators crawled up the steps without their mobility aids to symbolize the physical barriers they faced on a daily basis, the Capitol police responded in riot gear. This ultimately pushed Congress and President Bush to sign the ADA into law on July 26th.
