The Dotbusters were a hate group active in the United States’ New Jersey area from 1975 to 1993. With an influx of South Asian immigrants seeking economic opportunities and better lives, xenophobia and discrimination ran rampant. This hate group took their name from the bindi, a traditional forehead mark worn by many South Asian women, especially Hindu women. They engaged in acts of violence, harassment, and intimidation against South Asian immigrants, including publishing a letter in the The Jersey Journal that stated, “We will go to any extreme to get Indians to move out of Jersey City.” Indian community members and activists organized to raise awareness, leading to the strengthening of New Jersey’s hate crime statute.
