Begun in 1905, The Chicago Defender was founded to accurately report on the African American experience in the United States. This weekly paper was distributed through the United States South with the help of Black pullman porters on trains. The Chicago Defender actively campaigned for African Americans to leave the South (the Great Migration) and provided information on finding homes and jobs in the North. The Chicago Defender also provided accurate numbers on the lynching of African Americans as well as in depth reporting on larger white actions against African Americans, like the “Red Summer” of 1919.
