The surrealist art movement thrived in Europe between World Wars One and Two. The surrealist style combines dreamlike/fantastical elements with everyday realities and grew out of the earlier Dada movement which was a reaction to European realism which had dominated the art world prior. Many artists used surrealism to critique the “rational” elements of European politics, which they believed caused the atrocities of World War One. Surrealism focused on human psychology and drew inspiration from Sigmund Freud’s idea of the unconscious. Although most prominent surrealist artists were male (such as Dali, Miro, and Roy), several women dabbled in the surrealist community, and even Frida Kahlo’s works have heavy surrealist influences.
