The Stono Rebellion was the largest slave revolt to take place in the British colonies. The leader of the Stono Rebellion was a man named Jemmy, sometimes referred to as Cato, an African native who had been captured and brought to the colony of South Carolina. Jemmy recruited 60-80 other enslaved people to escape to Spanish Florida, where Spain had promised freedom to all enslaved people. This uprising was ultimately unsuccessful, Jemmy and his group being confronted by South Carolina militia, and in the years following the revolt, colonies passed increasingly strict regulations on enslaved people and slave owners.
