Through her training at the Highlander Folk School, Parks became a civil rights activist in the US. She became well-known for her refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. She worked with the local NAACP and Martin Luther King Jr. to work on desegregation in Montgomery. She continued to fight for civil rights long after the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
