In the early 1970s, most states banned or severely restricted abortions. In 1973, Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe”) filed a lawsuit asserting that the Texas law which banned abortions was unconstitutional. The lawsuit was brought before the Supreme Court, who ruled that the law was unconstitutional, and, furthermore, that no law could ban abortions based on the life of the fetus until the 3rd trimester. This landmark decision overturned dozens of state abortion laws and set a precedent which continues to protect women’s abortion rights to this day.
