Rachel Carson became a well-known author and conservationist with the publishing of Silent Spring in 1962. This book focused on the dangers caused by DDT and other harsh chemical pesticides. The results of this publication led to the ban on DDT and eventually aided in the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
