From 1919 to 1933, the United States banned the public use of alcohol through the 18th amendment. During the 1920s, the sale of illegal alcohol became widespread causing mass incarceration. There was also a rise in gang involvement during the decade. It was eventually repealed by the 21st amendment and became the only U.S. amendment to be overturned after ratification.
