In 1980, the United States and Soviet Union were locked in the Cold War. The nations competed in almost every field available to them- weaponry, space technology, and even sports. At the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, the Soviet hockey team was the undisputed favorite. They had been beaten by the United States only once in twenty years. Under the leadership of Minnesotan coach Herb Brooks, the U.S. Hockey team managed to win a semi-final game against the Soviets 4-3, advancing to the gold medal match against Finland (which they won). The victory was viewed across the United States as a symbolic victory over the Soviet Union.
