An American poet, Civil Rights activist, and award-winning author whose literary works addresses trauma, resilience, racism, love and struggle to reach her audience. Angelou's best known work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was an immediate best-seller which detailed her coming- of- age story. Angelou received several prestigious awards throughout her career for writing and reciting her poems, essays, and non-fiction literature by receiving more than 50 honorary awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010.
