Mary Church Terrell was a writer, activist and educator. Born in 1863 in Memphis, Church grew up during the time of Jim Crow and Racial segregation. Attending Oberlin College, Church received her master's degree in 1888. Church would go on to found the National Association of Colored Women, as well as help with the creation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and was an active member in the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Mary Church would live to see the desegregation of D.C restaurants in 1953, because of her landmark lawsuit, before passing away in 1954.
