Starting in 1882, the British imposed a sales tax on salt for all of India despite the fact that salt was valuable to all Indians and that it could be found readily available. In order to combat the injustices of the British, Mohandas Gandhi decided to hold a protest which would consist of walking 240 miles from Sabarmati to Dandi. As Gandhi and his followers made their travel, they spoke to several crowds to get their message out to people. At the end of the march, Gandhi led several thousand people there to make salt illegally. This march eventually led to civil disobedience in the country which led to the arrest of over 60,000 people including Gandhi himself. Despite the fact that the Indian Salt March did not give India its independence immediately or solve the country’s problems, it brought international attention to the issue.
