Hubert Humphrey was the mayor of Minneapolis when he spoke at the 1948 Democratic National Convention. An advocate for equal Civil Rights, Humphrey's speech helped him gain traction as a serious politician, eventually becoming the Vice President of the United States and narrowly losing the Presidency to Richard Nixon. Humphrey's early advocacy paved the way for Democratic support of Civil Rights.
