Horace Mann was the Secretary of Education in Massachusetts starting in 1837. As a former educator, he used this position to create what he called the “common school”. There were many key parts to his work with education: schools were key to keeping the country sustainable, schools should be funded by the people and be available for all students regardless of their background, a separation of church and school, and that qualified teachers were key to the success of education.
