Harvey W. Wiley was a chemist and the leader of the Poison Squad. In 1902, he conducted a year long experiment on himself and on 12 male volunteers to test what the negative consequences that the chemicals most commonly found in medicine and food had on the body. Wiley eventually became known as the “Father of the Pure Food and Drug Act” and the “Watchdog of the Kitchen.”
