Following violence between police and gay protesters during the Stonewall Riots, the Mattachine Society of New York moved to capitalize on the public energy surrounding gay rights. They founded the Mattachine Action Committee to organize protests. The Committee, which was generally made up of a younger generation of activists, quickly seceded and became known as the Gay Liberation Front. The Front played a major role in shaping and invigorating the gay rights movement. Many modern gay rights organizations were founded by activists who were trained and inspired in the Gay Liberation Front.
