Culminating from years of pressure from conservation activists and scientists, the Endangered Species Act was passed by the United States Congress in 1973. The act established a list of endangered and threatened species which is continually and rigorously updated by several federal agencies. Species that are included on either of the lists are subject to special protections. The ESA is considered one of the most successful legal attempts at species conservation and has become influential in other countries conservation efforts.
