The idea of independence from Great Britain came from several events leading up to the Declaration of Independence; events such as the Tea Act. The colonists, who resided in the Americas, suffered from great lengths of abuse and injustice from Great Britain which the colonists decided to strike against the British; leading to the Revolutionary War. The Declaration of Independence was the colonists political way to severing all connection with Great Britain to become their own independent nation. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed finally symbolizing that the colonists were their own nation, separate from Great Britain. This also gave the colonists several rights, such as the right to bear arms.
