The Compromise of 1850 was initiated when California wanted to enter the Union as a free state, but would have set off the balance between the number of free and slave states in the union at the time. The United States Congress passed five separate bills in September 1850 that became known as the Compromise. Legislatures hoped that the compromise would
ease the tension between the northern and the southern states. |
