Representatives of thirteen European countries met in Berlin in 1884 to agree about how they would continue to colonize Africa. The European leaders wanted control of Africa in order to boost their own power: by acquiring more land and by gaining control of resources. At the meeting they made rules for how they would explore Africa and committed to ending enslavement of Africans. As a part of their meeting, they created new boundary lines on a map of Africa, to use to determine which country would control which region of Africa. The boundaries were made with no input from Africans and with little understanding of the continent of Africa.
