The Battle of Blair Mountain is the largest labor uprising in United States history. After several violent failed strike attempts in southern coal mines of West Virginia, leaders from United Mine Workers Union organized a march with the goal of unionizing coal miners and liberating them from martial law. After encountering attacks, marchers retreated to Blair Mountain, where they would stay, gathering to a strength of nearly 10,000 men, for a violent, five-day stand-off against local law enforcement, strikebreakers, and the U.S. army.
