The annexation of Hawai’i was met with a great deal of ambivalence. For the production of sugar, and other economic purposes, some supported Hawai’i becoming the 50th state. However, others refuted the annexation of Hawai’i because it posed a threat to Native Hawai’ian culture. Ultimately, Hawai’i did become the 50th state, but there is still a great deal of controversy around the process in which Hawai’i was annexed.
