In 1963, Edward Schempp filed suit against the Abington School district in Pennyslavia. Schempp had a son in the school district, the son was required to read 10 verses of the bible. This was supported by a law in Pennyslavia. There were 4 other states that required schools to teach the bible. Schempp thought the schools were violating his family's rights. The courts ruled in favor of Schempp, 8-1. This case set a precedent for other similar cases and sparked much debate among the public.
