The Chicano Movement or El Movimiento was part of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Many Latino and Latina leaders addressed discrimination towards Mexican- descent citizens on a variety issues such as: voting rights, political representation, land grants, farm worker’s rights, educational access and recognition, anti- war efforts, and ethnic solidarity to identify as “Chicano”. El Movimiento established Mexican empowerment through action, to improve civil rights of Mexican Americans while asserting awareness for social and political change.
