The Pure Food and Drug act was a piece of progressive reform legislation, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in 1906, which helped protect consumers from toxic or mislabeled food and drugs. The Act was passed amid growing concern over the unsanitary conditions in the food processing- especially meatpacking- industry, which peaked after the publication of Upton Sinclair’s novel The Jungle in early 1906. The Pure Food and Drug Act established important consumer protections and set a precedent for future consumer protection acts.
