In 1972, terror broke out at the Munich summer olympics. Palestinian terrorists belonging to the group Black September stormed the Israeli section of the olympic village, killing two athletes and taking nine more Israelis hostage. The terrorists demanded the release of Arab prisoners being held by Israel. A deal was negotiated, but it fell apart at the Munich airport. During the ensuing firefight, all of the Israeli athletes and five of the terrorists were killed. The surviving terrorists were later assassinated by an Israeli government team. The olympics were suspended for 24 hours in order to hold memorial services for the slain athletes.
