Margaret Chase Smith was a U.S. Representative from 1940-1949 and a U.S. Senator from 1949-1973, representing Maine as a member of the Republican party. She specialized in military affairs and was tough on foreign issues. She consistently fought against McCarthyism, even before almost any other Republicans denounced McCarthyism. In some ways, she was quite moderate, sometimes voting pro-labor and supporting the Civil Rights Act.
