Jose de San Martin was a general and leader of South America’s battle for independence from Spain. Originally, he fought for Spain against Napoleon but rebelled against Spain because he was born in Argentina and related more with that population. He created a new army, The Army of the Andes, and won several battles, ultimately resulting in the liberation of Argentina, Chile, and Peru specifically. He is regarded as a national hero in Argentina and Peru. He died in 1850 in France after giving control over Peru to his peer, Simon Bolivar.
