In 1886, Dr. Martha George Ripley founded the first maternity hospital in Minneapolis, MN that accepted unwed mothers as patients when other hospitals turned them down. Maternity Hospital had lower infant mortality rates than the national average. Patients of Maternity Hospital could also receive social services for: poor children, adoption services, and job training. Also, Ripley was an advocate for the Women’s Suffrage movement as she was the President of the Minnesota Women’s Suffrage Association from 1883-1889.
