Charles Lindbergh was a famous aviator in the 1930s best known for making several nonstop flights over long distances. He was the first to complete a solo transatlantic flight. After doing so he was considered a celebrity and used his fame to promote the airmail service. During WWII, he achieved the rank of a Brigadier General but gave that up to protest American aid to the United Kingdom. He eventually supported the war after the bombing of pearl harbor and went on to help as a civilian consultant. He was a complicated person who was against the United States going to war with Germany but was also a leader in the environmental movement. He died in 1974 and left behind a complex legacy in aviation, environmentalism, and American politics.
