In the early 1800s, most scientists espoused the widely held belief that the Earth was six thousand years old and that all species had existed, unchanged, since the days of creation. In 1831, English scientist Charles Darwin embarked on a global journey aboard the HMS Beagle. Evidence encountered on his journey led Darwin to publish On the Origin of Species, in which he described his theory that modern life on Earth had evolved through a process known as natural selection. Today, Darwin’s theory, which has been validated by countless sources of evidence, serves as the basis for the entire field of biology.
