Bayard Rustin was one of the most prominent “behind the scenes” activists and organizers of the Civil Rights Era. A gay, black, socialist, and pacifist, Rustin worked with numerous civil rights organizations throughout his activist and political career including the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Southern Christian Leadership Committee (SCLC), and many others.
